A Mantric Metalanguage
40 Days and 40 Nights is related to and is based in part on the concept of mantra. Mantra is the use of essential tone and vibration to create effects with and interact with or within an environment. The particular tones and vibrations used in mantra are often pre-linguistic. They come from very ancient or prototypal phonetic and conceptual roots which are often either indefinable or have multiple meanings that outreach your conscious mind's ability to define what it's working with.
40 Days and 40 Nights is also pre-linguistic. More concisely, this music speaks in a language that is basic to all life, and perhaps to all being.
How is this so? Your perceptions of yourself and of the world come to you, at least in part, from information you gather via your nervous system. Your nervous system is made up of thousands and thousands of bundled fibers that fire in binary patterns of either off, or on.
These off/on patterns weave incredible binary symphonies and cascades of off/on polyrhythms that interpret each other to become the entire vocabulary of your perceptual experience. You are a binary creature. Everything you experience is an expression of multifold interactions of binary mathematics.
Your nervous system organizes information according to hierarchies of these binary patterns. 40 Days and 40 Nights is based on patterns and hierarchies of information that are similar to the binary information structures that your nervous system uses.
These neural firing patterns create and influence the perceptual attitudes or cognitive systems that you organize your life with. Your perceptual attitudes or cognitive systems also organize your neural firing patterns. It's a two way street: structure influences your perception and perception influences your structure.
It is now believed that this happens because ongoing reverberatory standing waves of stimulation can form interactive or co-active neural networks through actual changes in the structures of groups of nerve cells.
These groups of nerve cells can unite their functions in a way that becomes typified by particular characteristic qualities of pattern firing, which are in turn associated or connected with events in your perceptual field. These groups of patterns represent your outer world to your inner world. They can be influenced, activated and modified by your inner environment as well as by your external environment.
These connections between your outer world and your inner world begin to be formed when you’re developing in utero. It is said that by our fifth month of prenatal development, we have established the foundations of the neural system that we carry through our lives. The initial neural networks you form within this uterine environment give you a sort of base line, or original perception of self and other. This state of being may relate to what the ancient Taoists referred to as the "Prebirth State", "Preheaven Chi", and the "Original Face before you were born."
Then you enter life and its various stimuli. This causes new interconnections and associations to form between these neural pathways, which form the neural networks described above. As increasing levels of information get integrated into your nervous system, hierarchies of information form which become increasingly symbolic.
Multiple levels of these symbolic patterns compile to form an internal symbolic representation of your world. The way you reference and utilize these symbols happens holistically.
Malsburg said of this phenomenon:
"The mental symbols which constitute our thoughts are huge systems of cross referenced active units, all having vague meaning by themselves, creating precision only in their structured ensembles."
(Am I Thinking Assemblies? 1986)
These neural communities order themselves according to organic "logic thresholds", or quanta, which route stimulation/ information toward the most similar symbolic area for interpretation and perhaps integration.
So it is that your beliefs and expectations influence your experience of this world in endlessly self-reinforcing feedback cycles.
It is the intention of 40 Days and 40 Nights to speak through these levels of symbolic patterns to your ‘Original Face’, to empower it, to disentangle it from acquired belief systems, and to assist it in effortlessly and objectively becoming what it wants to be…

40 Days and 40 Nights is a Participatory Soundscape
It is a true challenge for our minds to grasp the vast depths of meaning and interrelationships of meanings portrayed within the progressions of 40 Days and 40 Nights' musical tapestries. Their effects go beyond the parameters of intellectualisation. They invite us to perceive and process information through another mode of perception, one where we can become more active participants with the music by creating it internally within ourselves as it plays.
We’ve noted this effect in many people who’ve shared their perceptions that 40 Days and 40 Nights has somehow created “new playback processes that allow the music to alter itself each time it plays, because the music sounds completely different each time it's played..."
This effect is perceptual rather than technical. It’s only one of the many paranormal effects that have been attributed to 40 Days and 40 Nights.
A student once asked a teacher:
"How should I hear correctly?"
The teacher replied:
"Not with your ears."
When the student asked for further explanation,
the teacher replied:
"Do you hear now?"
At which point the student was enlightened.

Tension
40 Days and 40 Nights creates new experiences of sound, tone, and the depths of vibrational relationships.
The very word tone itself is related to the concept of tension. Tone comes from the Greek word tonos, meaning tone, rope, silk, effort, power, stress and earnestness. It is the tension of a string that allows it to be tuned (toned) to a desired frequency. All other strings that are tuned to a similar level of tension will vibrate together along with it in unison. In fact, any object that has a similar resonant frequency will vibrate along with it in sympathy. Moreover, all vibrations affect and influence all other vibrations, and everything is vibration.
According to Fritjof Capra:
"The universe is no longer seen as a mechanical system composed of elementary building blocks but rather as a complex web of interdependent relationships. The network of relationships, moreover, is intrinsically dynamic. All forms are associated with processes, all interrelations with interactions, and opposites are unified through oscillations. In quantum physics, the science that pioneered the new vision of reality, subatomic particles are recognized as being merely patterns in an inseparable cosmic process. Matter, at the subatomic level, consists of energy patterns continually changing into one another- a continuous dance of energy... Atoms are patterns of probability waves, molecules are vibrating structures, and living organisms manifest multiple, interdependent patterns of fluctuations. Plants, animals and human beings undergo cycles of activity and rest, and all their physiological functions oscillate in rhythms of various periodicities." (from Capra's introduction to Nada Brahma )
There's nothing woo woo about the vibrational universe. It's a scientific fact. One interesting thing about this vibrational world is that it’s ordered according to whole number relationships, or quanta.
Again, according to Capra:
"It has been said since ancient times that the nature of reality is much closer to music than to a machine, and this is confirmed by many discoveries of modern science. The essence of a melody does not lie in its notes; it lies in the relationships between the notes, in the intervals, frequencies, and rhythms. When a string is set vibrating we hear not only a single tone but also its overtones- an entire scale is sounded. Thus each note involves all the others, just as each subatomic particle involves all the others, according to the current ideas in particle physics." (Ibid.)
Here's what he's talking about:
String Length
Oscillation Frequencies
In other words, when you shorten the string by one half, you get an octave. Shorten the string by two thirds, and you get a fifth interval, and so on. This is a harmonic proving of the existence of quanta that we can verify with our own senses.
Number, therefore, objectively exists in the sense that definite spatial, mass, and oscillatory relationships and proportions can be observed to exist. The lower the proportions of these relationships or relational numbers, i.e. the closer these proportions get to the octave, the more " harmonious " we perceive those relationships to be.
The physicist Max Planck, founder of quantum mechanics, said of this phenomenon:
"According to the postulate of quantization, the discrete intrinsic values of energy lead to certain discrete intrinsic values of the period of vibration. This happens in the same way in a tense string fastened at both ends. The difference between them is that on the string the quantization is conditional on an exterior factor, the length of the string, while here it is conditional on the quantum of energy resulting from the differential equation itself." (from Natural Tuning in Modern Vocal Music, 1893)
Since all waveforms and radiations demonstrate levels of order of harmonic structuring, we can transpose them into our range of hearing. Everything that we know to exist is up for musical interpretation. It always has been since the earliest of times. Plato, for example, who summed up much of the pre-Christian mystical traditions in his dialogues, describes the soul of the world as a musical scale in the Timaeus.
The great mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Liebniz wrote of this subject:
"Music is a hidden arithmetic exercise of the soul, which does not know that it is dealing with numbers, because it does many things by way of unnoticed conceptions which with clear conception it could not do. Those who believe that nothing can happen in the soul of which the soul is not conscious are wrong. For this reason the soul, although not realizing that it is involved in mathematical computation, still notices the effect of this unnoticeable forming of numbers either as a resultant feeling of well being in the case of harmonies or as discomfort in the case of disharmonies." (Maybe we could have another discussion about his concept of what a ‘soul’ is and his relationship to it.)

Dissonance
All dissonance tends toward harmonic resolution. This is especially so when you hear what you perceive to be dissonant relationships: they automatically invoke inner resolution. You hear the perceived dissonance and project its resolution at the same time.
The evolution of music itself precisely lives in the ongoing exploration and discovery of new harmonies and tonal relationships. Your perceptions of harmony and dissonance evolve over time. This happens both in your personal life processes and collectively in musical trends over the ages. It’s easy to observe this trend over the last few decades with the “fast history” of popular music.
Only very simple melodies were considered to be ‘musical’ in the early stages of western music. Initially only the octave was used to create harmonies. Later came the extensive use of the fifth, and then the fourth. In the middle ages, the interval of the third was appraised as being dissonant and satanic. Later on, the thirds became popular as the cutting edge music of the day, and so on.
How do all of these intervals sound to us now? Overall, it seems as if we’re collectively searching for new experiences of musical expression, new sensations and new realities. Even over the last fifty plus years we’ve seen a progression of the essential use of rock and roll as an anti-parental, sexual and pubescent ritual in the fifties, to a sociopolitical medium in the sixties, to being a completely different exponent in the nineties as a way that families came together, to a pseudo-ethnic/cultural expression of identity in the early part of this century. The function of rock and roll has changed and continues to change over time.
When you listen to rap and other new musics, it’s clear that there’s a different feeling that they’re imparting to you. You don’t just listen to it with your ears. It impacts your whole body. We take it for granted now, but when the new music first came out, its physical impact was revolutionary. In the new music, we found the musical streams of all cultures flowing together at last into a fertile, resonant ocean of vibration. We heard modularity. We heard circles.
In 40 Days and 40 Nights, we hear spirals. We hear potency. We hear the deepest inner processes of our structure and of our environment displayed across vibrational, tonal, musical and possibly not musical spectra. 40 Days and 40 Nights was called "Music that's not music" by its initial reviewers in the 90’s because it expresses an in-between world of pure sound, information and the innate order of our universe.
According to musicologist Gerhard Nestler, quoted in Through Music to the Self:
"This new music requires 'pure listening,' that is, a listening free of all customary rational and emotional ingredients. This pure listening to the tone and to its dimensions as such harbors the strong stimulation of this music. Music of instrumental colors is the most musical music since it is the music of the elementary existence of tone."
And according to Peter Michael Hamel in Through Music to the Self:
"It is the responsibility of spiritual music to learn from all musical traditions, to track down long-forgotten sources and to bring back into the limelight the original function of music- its links with the deepest in human experience- without, in the process, falling into naive eclecticism. At present there is a broad, strong urge to open up again those clogged wells of music which alone can reveal the way to a new type of musical experience encompassing man's being in it's entirety..."

Long-Term Influences
We could easily "prove" that lifting weights makes us weaker if we only measure the transient effect of muscle fatigue at the end of a work out. But if we focus on the longer-term influences that such training offers us, we arrive at a very different conclusion.
40 Days and 40 Nights trains your entire system in ways that are similar to other kinds of training, discipline or art. Like anything of value, it takes time to appreciate its depth and beauty. In the words of a great musicologist who listened to 40 Days and 40 Nights for the first time and was left stunned by its complexity, "You can't just get this in five minutes..."
You may think you get what 40 Days and 40 Nights is about in 5,4 3 or 2 minutes. Remember the words of the musicologist.
"The intergalactic phase of music touches
upon many points.
For instance, everything
is everything and outside of that is
nothing.
So in order to deal with the
infinity, I would have to deal with the
nothings and the everythings, of which each
one has its different potentials.
Then, after that, each one has its
multi-potentials; and after that each one
has its purposelessness, like the whole
infinity of the duality of everything.
There is no purpose... because if purpose is
considered by some as an end, then
endlessness to others would mean without
purpose.
Infinity, however purposeless,
does not hesitate to sponsor infinity
idea-projects."

A Field-Based Technique
40 Days and 40 Nights speaks a language of the deep subconscious. It communicates in a wordless realm where language is symbolic. It trains you to directly and consciously work with the subconscious. It also helps the deeper parts of you to train your conscious mind to be in flow with the universe. This is a significant new direction in the realm of biofeedback training and vibrational medicine in that it is not a mind-based, but a field-based technique. There’s a meeting in the middle of the conscious and subconscious. Each develops fluency with the other so that they both can more fluidly enter what was once more exclusively the domain of the other. Subconsciousness and consciousness merge into a single field of being.

40 Days and 40 Nights and Acupuncture Meridian Dynamics
What are meridians?
The meridians, or acupuncture channels, are one of the most important and unique contributions that Traditional Oriental Medicine has given to modern medicine. They consist of three-dimensional passageways (or multidimensional passageways according to some sources) through which Chi, blood and other body fluids circulate throughout your body.
On a physical level, the meridians form a network of superconductive pathways that allow every part of your body to communicate information with every other part. They integrate all your body's separate parts and functions into one unified organism.
The structured order of these energy channels forms the basis of Traditional Oriental Medicine. This order reflects many of the linkages and relationships that exist between your inner organs, your sense organs and other parts of your body, as well as relationships with other larger living systems within our environment.
Each meridian can also be described as a spectrum of qualities of interrelationships between your different chakras. That is, the quality of the Chi in your meridians tells you about the state of your chakra systems, and also how your chakras are working together as a team.
It is this focus on the qualities of relationships and synergisms between the various elements of a system that distinguishes truly holistic medicine from other medicines.
Each acupuncture meridian embodies, can be described by and can be influenced by specific ratios and frequencies. In acupuncture, the meridians are used to balance each other through the use of the relationships of their qualities.
40 Days and 40 Nights also utilizes each of these factors to create specialized progressions of beneficial interrelationships between your meridian pathways over the course of each track, section and its entirety. The progressions carry these relationships through each of your meridians according to specific sequences of frequencies and ratios that create, maintain and optimize the beneficial qualities characterized by the particular track or section you’re listening to. These relationships are evoked within each of your meridians, and through all of your meridian systems as a whole over the course of the progressions. This way, the effects of the progressions unify and synergize to form a holistic balance within you and your environment while creating motion and freedom at the same time.

Sex
40 Days and 40 Nights is based on the interplay of essential masculine and feminine polarities that dance and embrace each other in eternal conjugation, as with the complimentary codons of the plus and minus strands of the DNA double helix.
There are many multiples of these relationships in each of the six note arpeggios you hear in 40 Days and 40 Nights. The masculine and feminine qualities in each of these six note arrangements are determined relative to the constituents of the arrangement itself, and also relative to all of the arpeggios contained within the entire system as a whole.
The great musicologist Hans Kayser wrote of one of these characteristic relationships:
"The gender of a chord is determined by it's third: the major third makes it a major chord, the minor third, a minor chord. The third, in turn is determined by the fifth vibration, or by one fifth of the string length calculated from a base unit."
Each note you hear on a 40 Days and 40 Nights track is heard in relationship with all of the other notes on the track and the entire progression as a whole. Within a single arpeggio, you’ll find that each note is dynamically influenced by factors of attraction and repulsion with its immediate neighbors. Some of these relationships are immediately comfortable. Others are seek elsewhere for suitable partners, sometimes carrying themselves across the entire span of the progression and beyond to unify.

40 Days and 40 Nights and the I Ching
One of the simplest and most elegant keys to understanding the structure of 40 Days and 40 Nights is to describe it in terms of one of the most fascinating and timely classics of ancient world, the I Ching.
The I Ching is considered to be timelessly timeless because of its uncanny ability to describe and even predict situations and events with amazing depth, wisdom and accuracy.
The inner workings of the I Ching are particularly relevant to our times, because it describes our world according to a series of vibrational quanta around which energy structures itself to create our experiences of reality.
On deeper examination, the mathematical and geometrical structure of the I Ching is identical to the mathematical and geometrical structure of the DNA/RNA molecule, which is identical to the structure that forms the mathematical and geometrical basis of Acupuncture meridian dynamics.
40 Days and 40 Nights is a way that you can embark on personal excursions into multiple spirals of fractally-generated inter-related living vibrational quanta. The assemblages and textures of notes and sounds you hear within 40 Days and 40 Nights’ acoustic vibrational soundscapes correspond to the multiple relationships that exist between these flowing patterns as they come into being and live.
As modern science goes deeper and farther into the observation of energy phenomena in an effort to understand our universe, we discover more profoundly each day that these patterns may be all that really exist. These vibrational quanta are therefore beginning to be considered to be the new series of "vibrational elements" of the new physics. They are the living unity of physics, psychology and the new medicine.
It’s important to understand that these connections aren't merely theoretical. They are concrete, practical and effective. You can use this timeless technology right now to benefit your life and the lives of those around you.

40 Days and 40 Nights and DNA
DNA is the long, multiple-linked molecule that forms the biological "library" of information, instructions, codes or blueprints that our bodies use to carry forth our life processes. It looks kind of like a spiral staircase.
Each step in this staircase is made by a pair of chemical substances called bases. One base creates one side of the step, the other base creates the other side of the step and they meet in between.
There are only four kinds of bases that form these steps. Each sequence of three of these steps creates a potential instruction, or a "code word" that we can use at the appropriate time to make special amino acids. These amino acids have their own specific duties to fulfill along with other amino acid compounds, all working together toward the goal of a life.
Like DNA, 40 Days and 40 Nights creates a four-part coding system that generates informational streams from combinatorial qualities of triads of musical pairs and pairs of musical triads.
The mathematical basis of 40 Days and 40 Nights comes from a regenerative musical system that uses binary mathematics and the use of probabilities to create musical structures.
40 Days and 40 Nights uses this binary code in a quadratic system that corresponds to the four nucleotide bases that transmit and transfer the bimolecular information of DNA and RNA.
40 Days and 40 Nights uses these four bases combined in patterns, three at a time, in the same way that DNA and RNA use genetic codons to generate living amino acids in our bodies.
The primary structure of 40 Days and 40 Nights proceeds just as the linear, or primary structure, of the genetic code reads in only one direction. These are the streams of ascending arpeggios you hear in 40 Days and 40 Nights’ acoustic environments.
There are many other more complex, non-linear relational and functional orientations that these linear sequences create in order to manifest life. These relationships include those of synergistic molecular shapes interacting in the non-Euclidian three-dimensional space of their aqueous environment, and the effects of bioelectrical and biomagnetic fields on independent and aggregated structural patterns.
40 Days and 40 Nights makes extensive and creative use of the legato, plus sonic and other mnemonic techniques to bring out correspondences with these secondary, tertiary, and quaternary "fold" structural relationships of the branched polymer gels of DNA and RNA amino acid/protein matrices found in actual living systems. The structural properties of 40 Days and 40 Nights can be conceived as expressing a multi-dimensional, relativity-based geometry that both describes and influences dynamic processes.
